He not once mentioned that his own daughter was on the sunken ship and was believed to have been killed. An unusual story on one of the largest sea rescues in maritime history was the bizarre tale of Andrea Doria passenger 14-year-old Linda Morgan. “These ships had to stick to schedule or it would cost a fortune and mess up the lives of passengers who had to be somewhere at a certain time,” Knego said. Built as part of the Swedish America Line, the ship has had a storied life, including a notorious collision with the Andrea Doria in 1956. She also sailed behind the Iron Curtain as an East Germany cruise ship where many defectors would jump overboard seeking asylum when the ship navigated Western waters. She also served as a barracks ship for asylum seekers in Norway during the 80s and survived being attacked by pirates in 2006.

The Astoria began her long career as the first post-World War II newly built Atlantic passenger liner. In the closing days of the war, Swedish American Line had begun to plan for the resumption of its passenger operations. The company’s fleet consisted of a 1904-vintage liner that they had anticipated retiring in 1940 and a 1924 liner that was operating as a mercy ship by neutral Sweden during the war. We have been welcoming cruise ships from around the globe for over a decade. Our cruise visitors enjoy many activities and excursions while in port.

The MS Stockholm is best known for its part in one of the worst maritime disasters in history. I’m not a coffee drinker but the bar does have a genuine Italian espresso machine which is quite popular with coffee lovers. My caffeine of choice is Coke and the young servers in the Sirenes picked up on that immediately. Depending on the time of day, the servers knew I either would be ready for a cold Coke and glass of ice or a cosmopolitan at cocktail hour. We’ve been so busy that I haven’t seen all the nooks and crannies on the Astoria.

MS Stockholm

The boat has 11 decks, of which 9 are passenger-accessible and 4 with cabins. Following the acquisition, the vessel remained docked in Port Yalova (Turkey). Astoria Grande's Maiden Voyage was initially scheduled for March 5, 2022 (out of Sochi Russia) but later postponed for July 16th (7-day Sochi roundtrip). Our cabin was only a Grade 6 'outside' but very spacious, with 2 portholes, making it feel light and airy.

What remained of the former Stockholm was her hull with the double portholes of the dining room, as far as her interior was concerned some stairways were kept as they were. Her interiors, now those of a modern cruise ship, were luxuriously appointed with the use of marble, chrome and brass. Furthermore all of her cabins had a bath installed, a rarity on cruise ships at the time. After being sold to Festival Cruises a year later, she continued cruising from Cuba under her new name of Caribe.

Calamai stayed with the ship until all passengers were safety evacuated. Then he planned to go down with the Andrea Doria as he felt he should. However, fellow crewmembers said they would not leave until he left.

Stockholm – Astoria      (1948 – present)

While the Stockholm began rescuing passengers and other smaller boats arrived to help, a massive French ocean liner the Ile de France answered the distress call and used floodlights and lifeboats for rescues in the darkness. To make it even worse, the Andrea Doria’s eight portside lifeboats couldn’t be launched because the ship was capsizing. “There weren’t enough lifeboats for the passengers on the Andrea Doria,” Knego said.

In January 2020, CMV announced that ends the charter deal for Astoria in October 2020. She is a family-friendly resort-class ship and is among the smaller ones in the company (still large enough for amenities like a salon, SPA and mini-golf). AIDAcara is the first of its kind in AIDA's fleet of "club schiffs"/ships. Five of her crew members had been killed in the collision as there were crew quarters forward and several were still trapped in the crumbled bow. On the bow, a young lady Linda Morgan was found, who had been lifted from her bed on Andrea Doria by the penetrating bow of Stockholm as the two ships collided and catapulted on to Stockholm‘s deck, suffering just minor injuries. Her mother also survived, but her stepfather and half-sister weren’t so lucky.

But this was also relatively short lived as 2 years later she was laid up in Cuba. Festival Cruises was experiencing financial problems at the time and Caribe had failed to attract enough passengers to be profitable. The ship was once again acquired by her former Italian owners Nina Cia. Di Navigazione who renamed her Athena and she was immediately chartered out to Arcalia Shipping, Portugal who added her to their Classic International Cruises fleet.

She had earned herself a reputation of being a terrible roller because she was not suited for transatlantic service really. Stockholm just could not cope with the heavy seas of the often angry North Atlantic. Reason for this was not her rather small size, but more her hull design which was inadequate. SAL tried to solve this by filling part of her cargo holds with stone as ballast but this didn’t help much. Later stabilizers were fitted which finally ended stability problems. In January 2020, the cruise line said it wouldn't renew its contract and 2020 would be the ship's farewell season after completing sailings from England to Iceland, Scotland, Norway and the Baltics.

Radar was in its infancy in the commercial industry and the officers misread their devices causing the Italian liner Andrea Doria to emerge out of a fogbank making a turn across the course for the Stockholm. Her ice-strengthened bow tore through the Andrea Doria causing a fatal wound. A massive sea rescue saved most of the passengers aboard the Italian ship, which sank the in the morning, while the badly damaged Stockholm limped back to New York for repairs. A total of 51 passengers and crew on the two liners were killed in the tragedy. Limited by post-war shortages of materials and the capabilities of Scandinavian shipyards, Swedish American ordered a 525-foot liner that at 11,700 gross tons would be a workhorse carrying cargo and mostly tourist class passengers. She was designed for year-round Atlantic service and sailing to Scandinavia she was given an ice-reinforced hull and bow which would forever seal her legacy.
